Time Travel in the Name of Self-love

There is an epidemic that I notice over and over again in life and in my work with clients.
It’s the epidemic of not feeling good enough, and not being able to love ourselves fully.
It’s such a widespread issue for women that you can find endless articles on practicing self-love. Everything from increasing your self-care, to mantras, self-forgiveness, etc. Many of these are helpful. However, I believe that to truly move beyond a belief we must work with it at its source. So I’ve decided to share with you the one practice that gets to the core of beliefs and always works self-love miracles for me and my clients.

In my spiritual coaching work, I gently guide my clients to find the non-loving, judgmental thoughts within them and to travel back to find the source of these beliefs. Once at the source, we find a key person who helps us experience the magical transformation that untangles them from the belief, and creates space for new loving beliefs to be put into practice. 99% of the time when we go to the source of those ‘not good enough’ or ‘not worthy’ beliefs, we find an inner child that feels unloved or uncared for. Sometimes it’s a 4 year girl, sometimes a 9 year old, sometimes a young teenager. Regardless of age, traveling back to find this inner child is extremely healing. Our inner children are the versions of ourselves that live within us, they form who we have become. If they are still feeling unloved and believing they are not worthy, it will be challenging for us to feel any differently.

We can find so much resistance to loving ourselves right now, but loving that little girl within is easy. Caring for and protecting children is in our nature. When we see and feel that inner child, we also see and feel her innocence, her worth, her potential, her heart. Our love pours out to her with ease.  This is the most effective way I’ve found to heal the beliefs that created the lack of worth to begin with.

Emotions and beliefs don’t exist in linear time or space. When you heal emotions in the past you feel the effects in the here and now. I invite you to travel back in time, visit the little girls within, get to know them, get to know what they long for, listen to them, spend time with them, play with them, tell them how much you love them and why they are so special. You will both feel so much love.

Here’s how to travel back in the name of self-love:

Sit quietly. Relax your body by bringing your breath, softness and space to parts of the body that are resisting letting go. Allow your thoughts to pass like clouds, finding a space of mental stillness.

Connect to your inner child. Drop down into your heart and from this heart space simply allow an image of a younger you to come to you. Trust the first image or sense of your inner child that comes up. Notice what your inner child looks like. How old is she? How is she dressed? How is her posture? Is she smiling, crying? Get a sense for her and her life at this age.

Listen to your inner child. What does she want to share with you? Ask her what she is feeling. Ask her what she needs from you. Then just listen for anything that comes up, a sense, a word, a full on conversation. Trust what comes up for you.

Give your inner self what she needs. Share with her and give her what she asks of you. Tell her anything you want her to know. Tell her how you feel about her. Hug her. Hold her hand. Whatever feels needed and good.

Make a commitment. Travel back and visit as often as needed, until your inner child feels as loved as she desires. Then travel back again to visit another inner child who is waiting to feel loved.

Trust yourself and the images, feelings or words that come up for you. We are all capable of connecting to the earlier versions of ourselves. Ignore any voice telling you that you can’t do this or don’t know how. You don’t need any special skills, you don’t need to know how to meditate, and you don’t need to be intuitive.
